Zoology Lab

The Zoology Laboratory at NIILM University is designed to provide students and researchers with the necessary tools and resources to study the structure, function, behavior, and classification of animals. It offers a dynamic environment where students can gain practical experience and deepen their understanding of animal biology, conservation, and ecology.

Purpose:

  1. Education: To offer hands-on learning experiences for students studying zoology, biology, or related disciplines, fostering practical knowledge and skills.
  2. Research: To conduct experiments, dissections, and analyses of animal specimens, aiding the understanding of anatomy, physiology, genetics, and animal behavior.
  3. Conservation Studies: To study the biodiversity, ecology, and conservation status of various animal species, contributing to global wildlife conservation efforts.
  4. Practical Exposure: To provide students with exposure to techniques such as specimen preparation, identification, microscopy, and field studies, enhancing their learning.
  5. Training: To equip students with essential laboratory skills, including handling biological samples, using microscopes, and performing analytical tests for research and diagnostics.

Facilities:

  • Workbenches: Large, durable surfaces for conducting experiments, dissections, and studying specimens, designed for comfort and efficiency.
  • Microscope Area: Dedicated spaces with appropriate lighting and storage for microscopes, slides, and specimens, allowing for detailed examination.
  • Specimen Storage: Cabinets or refrigerated units to store preserved animal specimens, including those in jars or ethanol solutions, for future studies.
  • Aquarium Tanks: Used for housing live aquatic animals, enabling students to observe and experiment with aquatic life forms in real-time.
  • Storage for Chemicals: Safe, organized storage spaces for reagents, stains, fixatives, and other chemicals used in animal studies, ensuring proper safety protocols.
  • Safety Equipment: Includes first aid kits, fire extinguishers, gloves, aprons, and goggles to ensure a safe working environment while handling specimens and chemicals.
  • Library Section: A dedicated area filled with books, journals, and research papers related to zoology, animal studies, and ecological conservation.

Equipment:

  • Compound Microscopes: Essential for examining cellular structures, tissues, and small organisms, providing a deeper understanding of animal biology.
  • Aquatic Research Equipment: Includes water testing kits, fish tanks, oxygenators, and aerators, allowing students to study the behavior and biology of aquatic life forms.
  • Preservation Materials: Chemicals like formalin and ethanol used to preserve animal specimens for long-term study.
  • Staining Reagents: Chemicals such as hematoxylin and eosin, used for highlighting specific structures in animal tissues, aiding in detailed analysis.
  • Petri Dishes and Glassware: For culturing or storing small animal samples during research and experimentation.
  • Measuring Instruments: Manual and digital weighing machines, thermometers, and pH meters for accurate scientific measurements during experiments.
  • Electrophoresis Apparatus: Used for separating proteins or nucleic acids, a vital tool in genetic studies and research.
  • Centrifuge: Used for separating components based on density, essential for various biochemical and genetic analyses.
  • Fume Hood: A safety feature for handling hazardous chemicals or substances, ensuring the safety of students and researchers by keeping harmful vapors away.
